The Cabinet Painting Process

Cabinets ready to be painted

There are a couple of different ways to paint cabinets, and we’ll help you choose the one that best suits your tastes as well as your budget. Our most popular recommendation is spray painting, which creates a smooth and hard finish that makes the cabinets look like they’re brand new! We’ll take the time to ensure that there are no tiny blemishes or drips to be seen. We’ll also apply multiple coats to ensure that the results will really last.

Or, we can do a more traditional “brush & roll” paint job. While this won’t create the same seamless finish like spray painting, it can still make a big difference for the cabinets as well as the entire room, plus it costs a bit less as well.

Painting Cabinets or Resurfacing Cabinets?

One painted and one unpainted cabinet

At Platinum Painting of Dallas, we’re all about giving you options, which is why we offer both painting and resurfacing services for cabinets. Each option has its own unique perks, and we’ll help you choose which one best suits your personal vision. We tend to recommend painting over resurfacing, however, and here’s why:

  • Painting typically goes much faster by comparison and is, therefore, less disruptive to your day-to-day life.
  • Painting is much more environmentally friendly and less wasteful than resurfacing. We won’t end up having to take a lot of trash to the dump (which helps with cleanup as well).
  • Generally, cabinet painting is less expensive than resurfacing, which makes it ideal if you’re already happy with the overall style of your cabinets.

Cabinet Painting FAQs

Painting your cabinets can have a huge impact on your kitchen or bathroom, so it’s important to get it right from the beginning and pick the right company to complete the job. At Platinum Painting, we want you to feel comfortable and confident that you’ll get exactly the results you’re looking for. That’s why we’re answering the most common questions we get from our customers about cabinet painting below. If you have others, don’t hesitate to contact our team! We’re happy to help however we can and to schedule your free estimate.

Is there a difference between cabinet repainting and refinishing?

As the term implies, repainting is simply applying a different coat of paint. Refinishing entails a much more involved process of cleaning, sanding, and spackling before you actually get to the resurfacing part! At Platinum Painting, we generally recommend painting over refinishing because it is more cost effective and more environmentally friendly. However, if you are unhappy with the overall style of the cabinets, refinishing can save you from having to replace the cabinets altogether. Our estimators can help you determine which method will give you the results you’re looking for at the price that will fit your budget.

Do I need to clear coat over the paint to protect the cabinets?

We do not recommend putting a clear coat over your cabinets’ new paint. Why? You run the risk of having an adverse chemical reaction between the clear coat and the finish coat, which can make the cabinets appear more yellow over time. Instead, it’s best to use the proper techniques, primers, and high-quality finishing products in place of a clear coat. Our experts can help you navigate all your options and find the perfect one that will give your cabinets a fresh, long-lasting, beautiful look.

How long does cabinet repainting take?

The timeline can greatly vary project by project. It depends on, among other things, the number and size of the cabinets and whether you’re painting or refinishing the surfaces. Painting takes less time and costs less than refinishing. The technique that you want to use for painting the cabinets can also determine how long the project will take. Although we apply multiple coats, spray painting the cabinets can require less time than using a “brush and roll” technique. During your free consultation, our estimator can give you a clearer idea of the project’s anticipated timeframe.

What prep do I need to before you start?

When we arrive, we want to get right to work making your cabinets beautiful. In order to do this, we’d like you to do a few things beforehand. Please empty the cabinets of all dishes, appliances or devices, knickknacks, and other objects and store them in a different room so that they aren’t in the way. Try to have the countertops free of clutter, and if possible, give your cabinets a quick wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any grim and dust, but don’t use chemicals or cleaning products. If you do these tasks, we’ll be able to start immediately on transforming your cabinets!
